Those That Close and Those That Open

€242.00

Made in Besançon, France by Candice Crotet, Those That Close and Those That Open is a wall quilt pieced entirely from upcycled fabrics. Blocks of blue, beige, white and black build an architectural grid, with a few accents of pink, brown and gold. Its making was influenced by Japan, and the quilting is pared back to just five straight lines of green thread.

ABOUT THE CRAFTER

Candice Crotet is a French artist and quilter based in Besançon. After exploring abstract painting, photography, music and dance, she turned to quilting in 2022, revisiting a practice she had first shared with her mother.

Working mostly by hand with reclaimed fabrics, Candice approaches quilting as a way to express emotions rather than pursue precision. Her quilts bring together warm, joyful colours, with pink recurring throughout her work as a personal motif. Through the act of piecing fabrics together, she explores the idea of holding different parts of oneself together. Through the use of reclaimed fabrics, Candice creates quilts that bring together personal memories, emotions and a sense of comfort.

Made by independent women crafters

Women play an important role in shaping contemporary craft, carrying knowledge and traditions forward while finding new ways to work with them. By supporting their independent practices, we help this knowledge continue to grow, evolve, and remain part of contemporary life.

Collect directly from the crafter’s studio, or have it delivered straight to your door. Whenever possible, we encourage choosing crafters from your city, region, or country, and supporting local connections.
