Tiziana Schembri
Tiziana Schembri is a Maltese ceramicist based in Berlin, where she runs Clayground Berlin, a community ceramics studio. She began working with clay at 11, in lessons with the Maltese artist Anna Ciavola. She is largely self-taught and developed her practice in studios in Edinburgh, East London, Tallinn and Berlin, learning a new clay with each move.
She mostly throws on the wheel in stoneware and mixes her own high-fire glazes. Her plates, vases and bowls give as much weight to surface and pattern as to form. Her whippets, Boudicca and Agrippina, appear on her tableware alongside her recurring blue motif.
The selection at Crafters of Today brings together plates and vases chosen as a collection. The pieces range from a deep black vase to pale, decorated plates, held together by the same visual language.
