Ioulia Chante (b. 1991) is an architect and ceramicist, and the founder of Babau Ceramics. Her practice spans wheel-throwing and sculpture, often taking shape through zoomorphic forms that blur the boundaries between human, animal, and monstrous bodies. These hybrid creatures inhabit a space between the familiar and the strange, functioning as allegories of vulnerability, desire, and transformation.
Much like the monsters and animals found in myth and storytelling, her works act as mirrors—revealing hidden states of being and emotional truths that reflect the complexity of human nature while resisting fixed definition.
Statement:
My ceramic practice often takes shape through zoomorphic forms that blur the line between the human, the animal, and the monstrous. These hybrid creatures embody both the familiar and the strange, offering allegories of vulnerability, desire, and transformation. Much like monsters and animals in myth and storytelling, they serve as mirrors—revealing hidden states of being and emotional truths that describe human nature and resist easy definition.
Clay, with its tactile immediacy, becomes a medium for giving these creatures physical presence. Their bodies, sometimes playful and at other times unsettling, move between sculpture and function, embodying an ambiguity that invites reflection. In this way, animals in my work are more than subjects: they are vessels for emotional storytelling, embodiments of fragility and resilience, and companions that ask us to confront what we fear, long for, or cannot fully name.
